Edge banding, nobody mentions.

A 22mm strip of PVC. Applied with hot-melt glue. The thing that decides whether your furniture looks bespoke or DIY.

A laminated kitchen with raw plywood edges visible is a kitchen that's only finished from the front. Edge banding seals every cut edge — moisture doesn't get in, splinters don't appear, the laminate doesn't peel back. The right tape, in the right colour, makes the difference invisible.

Part II — Three Standard Sizes

Three sizes, three jobs.

Size 01

22 × 0.8 mm

Standard for 18mm plywood/HDHMR — covers the cut edge with 4mm to spare for trim. Most common; most-stocked.

For 18mm boards

Size 02

22 × 2 mm

Same width, thicker tape. Higher-impact zones — counter edges, drawer fronts that get bumped.

Heavy duty

Size 03

45 × 2 mm

Wide tape for thick edges — 25mm worktops, exposed end-grain on commercial counters.

Failure 01

Moisture creeps in

Plywood absorbs water through the cut edge faster than through any laminated face. Skip the tape and you've installed a sponge.

Failure 02

Splinters appear

Unsealed plies separate when bumped, leaving rough patches that snag clothes and catch hands.

Failure 03

Laminate peels back

Without an edge tape, the laminate has nothing locking it down at the boundary. It curls up; the cabinet looks finished from a distance only.
